Vrijstaat O. was established in 2010 as a new arts centre, the only one on the coast. It aims to distinguish itself with its distinctive formulas, which are eminently suited to be enacted in the unique setting of Ostend, city by the sea. By the water, on the land, and in the sky, we aim to make extensive use of the public space. All our projects are interdisciplinary, developed through an interplay of stage, music, visual arts and literature, and have had great international appeal. Vrijstaat O. also has a transversal branch for children’s activities, embedded in many of its larger projects, named “Kinderstaat O.” (Children’s state O.)

Aside from its project-based work, Vrijstaat O. uses its permanent site on the seafront as a low-threshold artistic meeting place and an open cultural centre with various stage acts (jazz, literature and debate, and the children’s version: OxO).
